Yesterday Boss turned four.  He is a healthy, happy, rambunctious little dog who loves to go on walks, tousle with his friends, play with his toys, sneak a treat or two and is always willing to snuggle with his humans.  He rarely barks, often bounces and is generous with his 'kisses'.

He has a distinctly unique personality. This is why, when one day he was lethargic,  and showed no interest in playing, eating or drinking,  it was easy to tell something was wrong.  With one phone call, his veterinarian was contacted, his symptoms discussed and a plan made to bring him in to the office.

This was also the reason, yesterday on his birthday, for a present, Boss got an annual checkup at his veterinarian.  Pets are susceptible to many ailments but are not able to verbally communicate their 'symptoms' or answer our questions.  By attending regular annual examinations, we have a healthy profile of Boss and a baseline for his bloodwork.  With this information, we can see any trends or changes and hopefully address them before they become a health crisis.

Today I realized a few benefits of having a solid relationship with a veterinarian.

1.  By visiting a veterinarian for non-emergency reasons, you reduce any stress your pet may feel when there is an emergency as your pet will be going to a familiar place.

2. By visiting your veterinarian, you build a relationship between them and your pet, again reducing stress and easing the experience when there is an emergency or a need for an extended stay. Your pet will be used to being examined by the veterinarian.

3. The trust built through an extended relationship, will ease any personal stress or anxiety you feel during an emergency situation.

4. By visiting the veterinarian consistently, you can help your pet stay healthy by establishing a wellness program.  Annual testing will validate the success of this program and identify the need for any adjustments.

5. Selecting a veterinarian who is qualified and whom you trust is valuable.  Selecting one who is also located conveniently close to you is priceless.

Yesterday, at his appointment, we learned that Boss is healthy.  His weight is good.  His heart and lungs are strong.  His teeth are doing well his ears and eyes also got the all clear.  His blood tests were clear and after receiving his vaccinations, he was off to play with his friends.

Used to visiting his vet, Boss sat patiently in the exam room, waiting for his appointment.  He was happy to see his friend Dr. Khan at Northtown Veterinarian Hospital and happily walked into the exam room, stepped up and stayed on the scale to allow a good reading.  He was a good boy on the exam table and in the lab.  When getting his vaccines, Boss did not flinch, bark or even growl.  He explored all of the scents in the waiting room, met a new pup and took a moment to 'water' the plants in the garden on the way out.

Yesterday, for a birthday present, Boss got the gift of love and good health -- the best present I could give to the little dog, who gladly offers love and comfort to all those around him.

Happy Birthday Boss!
